Interactive art and technology

The most interesting part of this reading was that fact that art and fine art is moving toward new frontiers. While this movement has been taking place for 20 years or more it is in the past decade that we have had the technology to make the dreams of artist come true. The ideas that designers and artist come up with are often impractical for everyday use but some of the programs and their functions have bits and piece found in everyday uses. So we will be using the projected image in all of our technology. But it is not the projection of the movie theater that is almost one hundred year old but the use of interactive projections that are making their way to the forefront of technology and our lives. We also watch a video clip in class where advertisement were projected on walls and printed material was almost no existent. As a designer and student this is not a very scary thing because we are being introduced to both the print world and the world of interactive design. I can only imagine the feeling that a designer from past decades gets when confronted with the task of learning new software and understanding new design techniques. But it is a fact that our world is ever changing and even students like me who are up to date on the latest technologies will eventually fall to the way side if we do not maintain the urgency to stay relevant in this world. But again the most interesting part to this article is the amount of opportunities that are opened up to the artist. The level of interactivity that can be achieved with our technology is amazing. This allows the artist o create something that I think is the greatest artistic feat. It allows them to create a piece of art work that changes with the viewer. It can also cater to the emotions and actions of the view to customize the imagery and allow for a truly unique and interactive experience. The sky is the limit with the technology available today and thing are only get more advanced it is exciting to think were the art world will be in 2030.

Technology

It was very interesting to read about people who were quite literally depicting the future of modern machines. Although this is something that has been happening for hundreds of years in science fiction writing it was interesting at how accurate these predications were. What I found most interesting was not his prediction but the turn our modern technologies has taken. He describes all these machines like calculators and small camera but in our modern ear no one could have predicted the combination of all of these machines. We have phones that do almost every task a computer can do along with others as well. Even our cars and refrigerators have incorporated the computer into their design. The possibility that all these complex machines could be combined into one machine is an idea that has escaped the author instead he only dreams of the machines independently operating. Another interesting thing in the reading was how industrialization and the stream line of the factory has allowed our culture to excel in technology. The calculator was invented years ago before mass production and was far to expensive to create on a large scale so the idea was thrown away. The calculator was only brought into production when the cost of the raw materials and the construction process was cheap enough to where it would be profitable to mass produce the.

What also struck me as interesting was no he reading itself but my thoughts after the reading about what our technology will look like in the future. Not only has the personal computer been sized to fit in the palm of our hand. To think about the size of a computer in the years to come is astounding. Where will we be in twenty, forty or even one hundred years? Another thing that the author did not touch on was the use of technology in medicine. Our society has made leaps and bounds in the medical field and it is due in part to the use of the computer. We also are developing machines that are able to keep our bodies by taking the place of vital organs. Technology is a very fascinating thing and it was really exciting to take a peek into the thoughts of someone who existed almost 70 years ago. The author predicted much of are modern day technologies very accurately. Does this mean that the predictions of tomorrow are just as accurate?

Annotation 2

The most interesting part of the reading for me was the sections of the first chapter that told of Harold Cohen’s AARON. It is ironic that we had this reading assigned because it coincides with the research I have been doing for thesis class. I have been searching for several weeks for an answer to the question “what makes art, art and what makes design, design”. My research has turned up many different answers and opinions. I found myself believing that it was the artist intent that made the art. This brings into question who is the artist in the situation of Harold and AARON. Was AARON the artist because the program was actually creating the work or was Harold the artist because he had laid the guidelines for the program to function? Harold had not told the program exactly what to draw. The program simply followed the rules laid before it and came up with a different picture each and every time. A human artist functions very similarly to the way the computer program does. To me art and design are one in the same. They are linked by one common thing and that is emotion. Emotion is something that I don think a computer could ever express.

It is my opinion that the computer is not the artist because it cannot express emotion and has no fore thought about what it will draw. An artist plans his or her piece and thinks about the idea they would like to express. Until a computer is capable of thinking on its own then there is no question that the creator of the program is he artist. While the programmer may not be actually drawing they did have the original idea of the program in the first place. I think it is possible that even when a computer is capable of free thought it will still be as a result of a program and his or her original idea. So possible what makes the artist is the idea that the art work is based on. That also brings up the point that if art is based on an original idea hen to be an artist does one even have to display their art in any for other than having the idea inside their own mind. It is a very confusing subject that has so many facets.
